Fantasy. Escapism. Competition. James Halliday and Ogden Morrow created OASIS, a virtual reality simulation where everybody can escape into. After Halliday's death, his pre-recorded message announces that he left an Easter egg behind a gate requiring three keys, which are awarded by completing three challenges. Whoever gets the keys and gets the egg becomes the owner of OASIS. This lured many egg hunters towards the quest for OASIS's ownership, but only one will win. And that winner must be a hardcore player.
